**Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys temminckii)**

Native to the southeastern U.S., this is North America’s largest freshwater turtle. Known for its alligator-like appearance, it has powerful jaws and can deliver dangerous bites if threatened.

**Danger to Humans**
Though not usually aggressive, it can snap with enough force to cause serious injury—sometimes even severing fingers. The vet’s shout of “Stand back!” highlights the immediate danger, even from hatchlings.

**Diet and Hunting**
Carnivorous, it eats fish, amphibians, and carrion. It uses a worm-like tongue to lure prey, striking with lightning speed.

**Behavior and Habitat**
Solitary and territorial, it lives in slow-moving rivers and swamps, feeding mostly at night.

**Size**
Adults can weigh 35–80 kg (77–176 lbs) and reach over 80 cm (31 in) in shell length.

Due to their size, aggression, and care needs, they’re unsafe as pets and often illegal to keep.
